NIGHTJAR - Northumberland & Northeast

The Nightjar, oh, the Nightjar. We’ve spent a fair few hours down on this fishing vessel, and honestly, it’s one of our favourite Northumberland wrecks for a relaxed dive. She went down in ‘46, a real piece of local history, and now sits bolt upright at just 14 metres. This makes her perfect for extended bottom times, really letting you soak it all in. You'll quickly pick out the wheelhouse, still largely intact, and the bow points north, often guiding your way in the gentle surge. As you fin along her deck, you’ll find plenty of nooks and crannies to peer into. We particularly love the stern section; it’s a magnet for wrasse and conger eels – not the giants you find on deeper wrecks, but still impressive. The metalwork is completely encrusted with dead man's fingers and colourful anemones, making the whole structure buzz with life even on a dimmer day. We’d suggest hitting this site on a flood tide, about an hour or two before high water, for the best visibility. It’s a proper chill-out dive, ideal for anyone who enjoys pottering around a characterful wreck without any big challenges.
