NUNCIO - Northumberland & Northeast

The NUNCIO is a proper historical wreck, sitting upright in a shallow seven metres. We love how accessible it is, making it a cracking dive for newer wreck enthusiasts or a great second dive of the day. You’ll spend your time exploring the remains of this sailing vessel, built in 1878, which went down after hitting the Little Burbo Bank. Even though it’s been down since 1883, there’s still plenty of structure to get amongst. The wooden hull has largely gone, but the frames stand proud, creating an intricate skeletal structure that’s become home to a surprising amount of life. Look closely within the darker nooks and crannies for resident crabs and lobsters, and you'll often see shoals of juvenile fish darting between the ribs. The prop and machinery are still discernible, offering a real sense of its past. We’ve found the best visibility here tends to be on an incoming tide after a few days of calm weather. It's a fantastic site to just relax, practise your buoyancy, and really soak in a piece of maritime history.
