Oliver Cromwell - Northumberland & Northeast

The Oliver Cromwell. Ah, she’s a proper dive, isn't she? Lying at 59 metres, this trawler wreck in the North Sea is for those who appreciate deep, challenging dives. We think the Cromwell really shines on a day with good visibility, letting you take in the sheer scale of her. You’ll find her mostly intact, lying on her port side, giving you plenty of structure to explore. We’ve spent hours poking around her engine room and hold, imagining the rough life these North Sea trawlers had. What we really love about the Cromwell is the sheer volume of life that’s made her home. Expect to see schools of bib swirling around the superstructure, their silver scales catching the torchlight. Ling often lurk in the deeper sections, and if you’re patient, you might spot a wolfish eyeing you from a dark crevice. Our top tip? Get there early on a slack tide, before other boats stir up the sediment. That way, you get the clearest shot at appreciating this historical wreck. It’s a dive that rewards experience and good planning, and we rate it as one of the best deep wrecks off the Northumberland coast.
