ONWARD FISHER - Northumberland & Northeast

We love a good wreck, especially one with a bit of a story, and the Onward Fisher has exactly that. Sunk back in '87 after a run-in with Half-Tide Rock, this fishing vessel now lies scattered, a metal ghost on the seabed. Don't expect a perfectly intact ship; what you'll find are the broken pieces, plates, and machinery, all now part of the rocky seafloor. It’s the kind of dive where you really need to take your time, picking through the debris. The beauty here isn't in grand scale but in the details. Crabs scuttle over rusty beams, and we've seen some surprisingly colourful nudibranchs clinging to plates. It’s a fantastic site for macro enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys the meditative hunt for smaller life. Visibility can be typical Northumberland, so maybe 5-10 metres on a good day. Our top tip? Go on a calm day with a small tide window, and bring a good torch – you’ll want to poke into every nook and cranny. This site suits divers who appreciate historical context and the way nature reclaims man-made objects, rather than those chasing big pelagics.
