PEGU (STERN) - Northumberland & Northeast

The *Pegu* stern is one of those local wrecks we always make time for. She’s a big old steamship, 142 metres long, and the stern section sits upright in a surprisingly orderly fashion at just 12 metres. That depth means long bottom times are the order of the day. We’ve found the best approach is to take it slow, really soak in the atmosphere of a vessel nearly a century old. Drop down onto the deck and you’re immediately into a maze of twisted metal and open holds. Light streams through gaps, highlighting schools of pollock darting between the frames. Look closely amongst the kelp and you'll spot velvet swimming crabs, their eyes like tiny red beads, and lobsters tucked into every crevice. We particularly love the feeling of being inside the wreck, peering into its dark corners, knowing the history of how she ended up here back in ’39. This is a dive for anyone who appreciates wreck diving, especially those looking for an easy, rewarding experience without the need for technical skills.
