PINTAIL - Northumberland & Northeast

The Pintail, a small fishing vessel that capsized in '96, might only be 7.3 metres long and sit in two metres of water, but it's a site we consistently recommend for those looking for something a bit different in Northumberland. It's not about deep exploration here. Instead, you're looking at a fantastic opportunity for an extended shallow dive, perhaps even snorkelling on a calm day. We love how accessible it is, and for new drysuit divers or those getting back into colder water, it's a perfect confidence builder. The wreck itself is pretty broken up, but you can still make out the general shape of the hull. Look closely and you’ll find plenty of life: small crabs scuttling amongst the plates, blennies peering out from crevices, and often shoals of juvenile fish darting around the structure. The light penetration is incredible, even on a cloudy day, painting the rusted metal in shifting patterns. Our favourite time to visit is on a slack tide, just as the sun breaks through, turning the sand around the wreck into a shimmering canvas. Keep an eye out for flatfish camouflaged on the seabed nearby. It's a gentle, relaxing dive that reminds you sometimes the best things come in small packages.
