POLARLIGHT - Northumberland & Northeast

The POLARLIGHT. A wreck we always enjoy revisiting, even with the sometimes challenging North Sea conditions. This motor vessel, a good 41.8m long, went down back in '89 after her cargo shifted, now resting upright at 30m. She’s often described as a dangerous wreck, but that just means there's plenty to get into if you know what you're doing. What we love about the POLARLIGHT is the sheer volume of space. You can swim through the holds – big, cavernous areas where the light filters down, making the metal ribs visible. The wheelhouse is a highlight; it’s largely intact and feels like stepping back in time. On a good day, with decent visibility, you’ll see plumose anemones carpeting every surface, their feathery tentacles swaying in the current. Ling often lurk in the deeper sections, and conger eels peek out from every gap. We’ve had dives here where the schools of coalfish were so thick you could barely see the bow. Definitely one for experienced wreck divers who appreciate a bit of exploration and don’t mind a chillier dive.
