PORT BOU - Northumberland & Northeast

The Port Bou, for us, is a firm favourite, despite its rather sad end in 1979 while under tow for a refit. This ex-Haganes fishing vessel lies upright and largely intact at 18 metres, making it an excellent dive for those who appreciate a wreck with a bit of history and character without the depth challenges of some other sites. What we really love about the Port Bou is how the North Sea has claimed it, transforming the old fishing boat into a vibrant habitat. You’ll find plumose anemones carpeting the superstructure, swaying gently in the current, and often a grumpy-looking wolf fish peering out from a dark crevice. Keep an eye out for inquisitive pollack darting through the wheelhouse and the occasional velvet crab scuttling across the deck. We've had some cracking dives here, with visibility often better than you'd expect, especially on a neap tide. It's a proper British wreck dive; don't expect tropical colours, but do expect a fascinating exploration and plenty of life to spot if you take your time.
