REA 9 (POSSIBLY) - Northumberland & Northeast

REA 9 (POSSIBLY) is one of those North Sea wrecks that just hits differently, a forgotten barge lying upright at 37m. We love the sheer eeriness of it, a hulking shape emerging from the green, silty gloom, often with a slight current nudging you along. This isn't a wreck you'll penetrate, but the superstructure offers plenty of nooks to poke around in. Look for the massive cod that often lurk in the shadows, along with wolfish peering out from under plates of rusted steel. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the quiet solitude of a deep wreck, the sense of history rather than vibrant colours. Visibility can be a challenge here, typically settling around 5 to 8 metres, but sometimes it opens up unexpectedly. We’d suggest diving this one on a slack tide, otherwise, you'll be working hard. The best experience comes when you slow down, let your eyes adjust, and just take in the sheer bulk of it all. It’s a site for experienced cold-water divers, no question.
