TYNEMOUTH CASTLE - Northumberland & Northeast

Tynemouth Castle is one of our favourite North East wrecks, especially for those looking to explore a proper steamship without needing advanced certs. The wreck lies broken in two main sections, making for some fascinating navigation through collapsed hull plates and scattered machinery. We love how the light filters down through the green North Sea, illuminating the swim-throughs and revealing the resident wrasse darting between the ribs of the hull. You can spend a full hour tracing the outline of the stern, imagining the ship's last moments. Look for the prop shaft stretching out, a good indicator of your direction. The bow section often holds a surprise or two, a lost porthole perhaps, or a conger eel peeking from a dark crevice. We've seen some impressive schools of cod here, and the anemones that have colonised the ironwork are a vibrant splash of colour against the rust. It's a dive that rewards careful exploration and a good torch, perfect for divers comfortable in cool water and keen on a bit of history.
