VARAND - Northumberland & Northeast

The Varand, gone since February 1928, offers something genuinely atmospheric for divers in the Northeast. We’d classify this as a wreck for those who appreciate history and the slow reclamation by the sea. Dropping down, you’ll pick out the skeletal remains of her hull, often silhouetted against the emerald light filtering from above. It’s not a massive wreck, but the way she’s fallen, a bit broken and scattered, creates some lovely nooks and crannies to peer into. We particularly love the feeling of swimming through what was once the Varand’s internal structure, now a home for blennies and small crabs. You’ll find cod sheltering in the larger sections and often a few inquisitive wrasse darting about. The currents here can be a bit frisky, especially on a spring tide, so we always suggest timing your dive for slack water to really take your time exploring. Visibility is typically North Sea – think greens and greys, but often surprisingly clear, giving that perfect sense of discovering something old and forgotten. It’s a dive for those who enjoy taking it slow and piecing together a story.
