VIGSNES - Northumberland & Northeast

We love a good wreck, and VIGSNES delivers a proper piece of history. This steamship, torpedoed in 1945, sits at 44m, making it one for experienced divers who are comfortable with depth and perhaps a bit of dark. Descending onto the main deck, you can feel the chill of the North Sea, but the real reward is the ship’s structure. We often find the bow section particularly striking, with its torn metal plates telling the story of its sinking. Look closely inside the cargo holds, and you’ll find conger eels peering out from cracks, their thick bodies coiled amongst the twisted metal. The stern holds more secrets, and we’ve spent many a dive exploring the propshaft tunnel, often finding lobsters tucked away. Visibility here can be a bit variable, but on a good day, when the light penetrates even this deep, the sheer scale of the VIGSNES really hits you. It’s a somber site, but endlessly fascinating for those who appreciate maritime history and the hardy creatures that call it home.
