VIKING (PROBABLY) - Northumberland & Northeast

The Viking (Probably) is exactly what it says on the tin: a probable Viking longship, or at least that's the tale. Truth is, it's the wreck of a fishing vessel that went down in '77. Don't let the name fool you into expecting ancient history; this site is all about the modern wreck experience, and what a shallow one it is. At a consistent 3m, this site is practically a snorkel, but don't underestimate it. We love popping in here on a calm day, especially if we've got a new diver with us or just fancy a relaxed second dive. The wreck itself is pretty broken up, but you can still make out the ribs and some of the hull, especially when the light filters down through the surface chop. We often find juvenile coalfish darting through the wreckage, and sometimes a grumpy crab peering out from under a plate. It’s not a big wreck, but the sheer amount of light you get makes the whole experience feel open and bright, even on a grey British day. Keep an eye out for the odd sea slug on the growth-covered metal.
