Wreck of Betsy - Northumberland & Northeast

The Wreck of Betsy off the Northumberland coast is one of our favourite UK wreck dives, especially for those blustery days when the sea might look a bit moody on the surface. Descending onto her, the wreck immediately reveals her character. She’s not some broken pile of scrap; you can still make out the bow and stern, her ribs standing proud, framing ghostly views through the structure. We love how the light plays through the gaps, silhouetting the schools of cod that hang out in her shadow. She's an excellent dive for those who enjoy a good rummage without needing deep technical skills. The depth here means you get plenty of bottom time to explore the nooks and crannies where the wrasse dart about, and lobsters peek from under plates of steel. Look closely, and you’ll spot nudibranchs, often in surprising colours, clinging to the encrusted metalwork. Our advice? Go on a calm day if you can, and bring a good torch; there are always interesting little corners to illuminate. Even on a murky day, the wreck itself provides enough structure and interest to make it a memorable dive.
