Wreck of Caledonia - Northumberland & Northeast

The Caledonia, a true workhorse of a trawler, lies broken but fascinating off the Northumberland coast. We love a wreck with character, and this one certainly delivers. Descending onto her, you immediately feel the history; her ribs stand proud, draped in kelp that sways with the surge, making her feel alive despite her demise. Visibility here can be a lottery, typical for the Northeast, but when it's good, say 8-10 metres, the wreck transforms into a dark, intricate playground. Our favourite part has to be exploring the twisted metal sections, where you’ll often find huge lobsters tucked away in crevices, their antennae twitching in the current. Ling often lurk in the deeper, darker corners, and you might spot a friendly wolf fish peering out from beneath a plate. It's a site that rewards multiple dives. Each visit reveals something new, whether it's a previously unseen section of the engine room or a nudibranch colony you missed last time. This isn't a site for beginners, we'd suggest divers are comfortable with colder water and perhaps a touch of current, but for those who are, the Caledonia is a proper British wreck dive.
