Wreck of Cambridge - Northumberland & Northeast

The Wreck of Cambridge, off the Northumberland coast, is a proper adventure. We’ve always found these North Sea wrecks demand a bit of grit, and Cambridge is no exception. She’s a great big freighter, well broken now, but still holds together enough to give you a real sense of her scale. Drop down and you’ll often find yourself in that silty green gloom that’s so characteristic of the region, but push through it and the rewards are there. We love nosing through the bow section, where the anchor chains lie draped like forgotten jewellery, and the stern offers up some dramatic views as the light filters down. Everywhere you look, there are plumose anemones, their fluffy white tentacles swaying gently, and big lobster often peer out from shadowy corners. It’s a site that really suits divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a current; when it’s running, you’ll definitely feel it. Our favourite moments here are always when a school of pollock materialises out of the murk, swirling around the superstructure before vanishing again. Practical tip: aim for slack water, it makes life much easier, and bring a good torch – you’ll want it for peering into the deeper recesses.
