Wreck of Dido - Northumberland & Northeast

There’s something about a deep, dark wreck that just calls to us, and the Dido, lying off the Northumberland coast, is one of our favourites in the UK. Dropping down onto her, the first thing you notice is how intact she still is. We’re talking about a proper freighter, sunk way back in 1928, and you can still make out the superstructure, the deck plates, even some of the cargo holds. The visibility here can be… well, it’s the North Sea, so it’s variable, but when it’s good, the light filtering through the gloom gives the whole site a real eerie beauty. You'll spend your dive poking around her ribs and beams, often finding lobsters tucked into every crevice and huge conger eels peering out from deeper within the hull. Big wrasse dart between the rusted metal, and the sheer scale of the wreck means you’ll want more than one dive to properly explore her. We’d suggest a good torch, even on a bright day, to really appreciate the hidden corners and the life that thrives there. This isn’t a shallow reef dive; it’s for divers who love history and don’t mind a bit of a current for a truly atmospheric experience.
