Wreck of Ecaster - Northumberland & Northeast

The *Ecaster* wreck off the Northumberland coast is a proper dive, one we keep coming back to. This isn't some colourful reef; it’s a sombre piece of history, swallowed by the North Sea, but alive with a different kind of beauty. Dropping down, you hit the bow first, often enveloped in shoals of saithe so dense they part around you like a living curtain. The stern is more broken up, scattered plates and ribs forming nooks for blennies and squat lobsters. We love poking into the debris, imagining the ship in its working days. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, sometimes a solid 10 metres, sometimes a murky five, but even on a darker day, the atmosphere is incredible, the wreck’s silhouette emerging from the gloom. It’s a site for divers who appreciate the industrial archaeology of a shipwreck and the hardy local critters that have made it home. We’d suggest timing your dive for slack water to make exploring the interior safer and less of a workout. Look for the wolf fish that sometimes hide amongst the collapsed superstructure; they’re a rare treat.
