Wreck of Favourite - Northumberland & Northeast

We always enjoy a good rummage around a wreck, and the Favourite off the Northumberland coast is one we often talk about. This isn't some pristine, intact vessel; it's a wonderfully broken-up cargo steamer, scattered across the seabed. What we love about it is the way it’s become part of the reef itself. You can fin through the ribbing of the hull, spotting wolf fish tucked into crevices and ling snaking through the collapsed plating. The stern section, in particular, is a highlight. We’ve spent many a dive there, watching the shoals of coalfish swirl around the propeller shaft, and finding edible crabs scuttling amongst the debris. Visibility here can be a bit hit or miss, typical for the North Sea, but on a good day, when the sun penetrates the green water, the wreck takes on an eerie, inviting glow. We’d suggest timing your dive for slack water; the currents can be a real nuisance otherwise, especially if you want to explore the deeper sections. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and the way the sea reclaims its own, best suited for experienced divers comfortable with colder water and sometimes limited visibility.
