Wreck of Hazard - Northumberland & Northeast

The Hazard isn’t about big pelagics or colourful reef fish, it's about history and atmosphere. This old steam trawler, sunk in 1918, lies broken but still recognisable on a sandy seabed off Beadnell. We love how the strong currents, which can be a bit of a workout, have sculpted the wreck, making it feel ancient and a true part of the North Sea. Drop down and you're immediately in its world. The stern is often our favourite part, with its propeller still largely intact, despite the passage of time. Visibility here can vary wildly, from a murky ten feet to a surprisingly decent twenty-five, so pick your day carefully, ideally on a slack tide. Look closely and you'll spot lobsters tucked into crevices, velvet crabs scuttling over corroded metal, and sometimes a curious grey seal giving you the once-over before disappearing into the green gloom. It’s a dive for those who appreciate wrecks as time capsules, who don't mind a bit of a chill, and who find beauty in the rust and the stories it tells.
