Wreck of Maid Of Erin - Northumberland & Northeast

The Maid of Erin is a proper North Sea wreck, and we absolutely love it. You’ll find her resting on a sandy seabed, often with a good push from the current. It’s not a gentle drift, but that just adds to the adventure. We always hit this one with a good tide plan, especially if you want to explore her properly. She’s broken up now, a scattering of steel plates and beams, but you can still make out the bow and stern sections. It’s a real history lesson down there, a tangible piece of maritime past. We’ve spent many dives just tracing the outline of her hull, imagining the storm that took her. The wreck acts as a fantastic artificial reef. Look out for the massive lobsters tucked into every crevice, and the shy velvet swimming crabs scuttling across the metalwork. The sheer volume of wrasse flitting between the ribs of the ship is incredible; sometimes the schools are so thick you have to wave your hand through them. This site is definitely one for the experienced wreck diver who appreciates the history as much as the marine life. It’s cold, it’s often dark, but it’s genuinely rewarding.
