Wreck of Monreith - Northumberland & Northeast

Diving the Monreith in Northumberland is a proper expedition, and that’s part of its charm. This isn’t a gentle drift over pretty corals; it’s a dive into history, cold water, and often, some serious current. We love it for the sheer scale of the wreck. It’s a huge cargo steamer, broken into three main sections, all spread across the seabed. Dropping down, you hit the bow first, often standing proud with thick anemone growth, then you navigate towards the midships and stern. Our favourite part is exploring the engine room, if conditions allow – it's an exhilarating squeeze in places. Visibility can swing wildly, from a glorious 15 metres to a murky five, so pick your day carefully; slack water is key. We’d suggest a neap tide for the best chance of a relaxed dive. Look out for the massive conger eels that call the wreck home, peering out of every nook and cranny. You’ll also spot plenty of lobsters, crabs, and the occasional inquisitive grey seal playing in the kelp nearby. It’s a site best suited for experienced cold-water wreck divers who appreciate the challenge and the tangible sense of history.
