Wreck of SM UB-4 - Northumberland & Northeast

The Wreck of SM UB-4 is one for the history buffs, a genuine piece of World War I resting off the Northumberland coast. We wouldn't call it a riot of colour, but there's a certain stark beauty to this German submarine. It lies broken, a testament to its dramatic end in 1915, with sections of the hull peeled open, revealing the intricate inner workings. You'll fin through the shadowy interior, imagining the crew who once called this claustrophobic space home. Shoals of saithe often swirl around the conning tower, and we've spotted some impressive ling lurking in the more protected crevices. Our favourite part is navigating the engine room, where machinery still sits, encrusted with anemones and dead man's fingers. It's a sombre, thought-provoking dive, best tackled on a calm day with minimal surge – the visibility here can be temperamental, but on a good day, the sense of history is palpable. This one suits divers who appreciate historical context over tropical fish, prepared for cooler water and the unique challenges of a North Sea wreck.
