Scuba World - California
The team at Scuba World in Orange County are the kind of people you want teaching your kids, or your mate who's finally decided to get certified. They’ve got that solid, dependable vibe, and we always appreciate a dive centre that keeps things straightforward and focused. They stick to PADI courses, which means a consistent, well-recognised standard, perfect if you’re just starting out or looking to advance your recreational certs without too much fuss. What we really like about Scuba World is their clear emphasis on local diving, especially the kelp forests around Southern California. There’s something truly magical about drifting through those towering stalks, the sunlight dappling down, and seeing a bright orange garibaldi dart between the fronds. We’d suggest going on a weekday if you can; the weekend boats can get a bit busy, and the kelp feels much more immersive when you have a bit more space. Keep an eye out for horn sharks tucked into the holdfasts, and if you’re lucky, a curious harbour seal might pop by for a closer look. They’re a great choice for getting comfortable with cold-water diving too, and their gear rental always seems to be in good nick, which is key when you’re wrestling into a thick wetsuit.
