Valiant Wreck - California

The Valiant Wreck, resting off the California coast, isn't just another pile of metal. This is a proper historical dive, the bones of a paddle steamer from the 1800s, and we think that backstory really makes it special. You're not just looking at a wreck, you’re touching a piece of history. What we love most about the Valiant is the way it’s settled into the seabed, a surprisingly intact skeleton that still gives you a sense of its original form. As you descend, the cool California current often brings good visibility, letting you make out the paddle wheel housings and the curve of the hull. We've spent hours exploring the scattered timbers and copper sheathing, noticing how sea anenomes and nudibranchs have colonised every surface. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially when a school of rockfish swirls through the remaining structure, momentarily obscuring a porthole. We'd suggest going on a calm morning, before the afternoon chop kicks up, for the best chance at clear water. This site is a fantastic pick for anyone who appreciates a wreck with a story.
