Dredge Wreck Reef AR-382 - 86 tug R R STONE - North Carolina

The R.R. Stone is one of those North Carolina wrecks we find ourselves coming back to, not because it’s a colossal liner, but because it’s a perfectly sized tug, just begging for exploration. Dropping onto her deck, you’re immediately enveloped by the sheer volume of baitfish – often silversides – so dense it feels like swimming through liquid metal. We love the way the light filters down, dappled by the schools, creating an almost ethereal glow around the structure. She sits upright, largely intact, which always makes for a satisfying penetration if you’re comfortable with overhead environments. Our favourite part has to be the engine room; it's tight, but you can still make out machinery, all now draped in growth. Look for the resident sheepshead and triggerfish patrolling the superstructure. They’re usually quite bold. We'd suggest this dive for advanced open water divers keen on wreck penetration, or anyone who enjoys a wreck that feels more like a living reef than just a pile of steel. It’s got character, and it’s always got fish.
