Dredge Wreck Reef AR-382 - Dredge PLAYA - North Carolina

The Dredge *Playa* wreck, part of North Carolina’s AR-382 artificial reef, is a fantastic change of pace from the bigger German U-boats or freighter dives we usually chase here. It’s not some grand, intact vessel; think more like a scattered industrial playground for marine life. We love how the dredge’s massive bucket wheel, now detached and lying a little off the main structure, has become a complete apartment complex for schooling baitfish. You’ll see them swirling around it so densely, they often obscure the wheel’s spokes. It’s an ideal spot for divers who appreciate the way nature reclaims human-made structures. We often find goliath grouper lurking in the larger openings, almost indifferent to divers, and the resident sand tiger sharks love to cruise the deeper sections, particularly early morning. This site suits intermediate divers comfortable with potential currents, offering a solid hour of exploration around its various components. Don't expect dramatic swim-throughs, but there’s plenty of nooks to poke your head into, and the hard corals are really starting to take hold.
