General Sherman Wreck - North Carolina

The General Sherman wreck in North Carolina always delivers a certain mood. We’ve been out to her more times than we can count, and it’s never just another dive. This isn't some scattered debris; it's a proper ship, a Civil War-era paddlewheel steamer, sitting mostly intact. Dropping down, you feel the history, that sense of a vessel frozen in time. What we love about the Sherman is the sheer scale of it, and how accessible much of it still is. You can follow the length of the hull, spotting the huge paddlewheels that are now home to thick clusters of anemones and schools of spadefish. The ship’s boilers are a real highlight, colossal iron cylinders encrusted with barnacles, often with solitary amberjacks circling them, eyeing you up. Keep an eye out for the resident sand tiger sharks; they love the shelter provided by the deeper sections and we’ve often found them resting amongst the wreckage, almost camouflaged. It’s a dive that rewards careful exploration, a chance to really connect with a piece of history and the marine life that has claimed it.
