USCGC Cuyahoga Wreck - North Carolina

The Cuyahoga is one of those wrecks that just keeps on giving. We’ve had some truly memorable dives here, often in conditions that felt a bit like a washing machine on the surface. But drop down and you’re met with a surprisingly intact coastal buoy tender. The wreck sits upright in around 30 meters of water, so it’s a good one for advanced open water divers comfortable with depth. We love the way light plays through the superstructure, especially on a sunny day. Inside, the engine room is accessible if you’re properly trained and equipped for overhead environments. Otherwise, stick to the deck where she’s completely encrusted with sponges and anemones. Look for big schools of baitfish shimmering around the mast, often shadowed by amberjacks or barracuda. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the prop is usually surrounded by grunt and snapper, and we’ve even spotted big loggerhead turtles cruising by. It’s a classic North Carolina wreck: plenty of structure, plenty of fish, and always a story. Dive it on a calm day if you can, the current can be a real push.
