USNS Haviland Wreck - North Carolina

We love the USNS Haviland for its sheer size and the way it’s settled on the seafloor. This isn't some small fishing boat; it’s a substantial naval vessel, now a sprawling artificial reef off North Carolina. Drop down, and you’re immediately enveloped by the sheer scale of it, the steel structure silhouetted against the ambient light. Our favourite part is exploring the cargo holds. They’re wide open, inviting you in, but still dark enough to need a good light. You’ll weave past huge schools of baitfish, sometimes so dense they shimmer like a living wall, and often spot sand tiger sharks cruising the deeper sections, their toothy grins a welcome sight. We’d suggest diving this one when the Atlantic is calm; strong currents here can make navigating the interior a real workout, though they do bring in more pelagics. It’s a dive that rewards careful exploration, suited for experienced wreck divers comfortable with penetration and the occasional low visibility.
