USNS Webster Wreck - North Carolina

The USNS Webster is quintessential North Carolina wreck diving, and we love it for its sheer scale and the history it represents. Lying around 30 metres down, she’s a huge, intact cargo ship, a Liberty ship from World War II. You can penetrate several of the larger cargo holds, which really gives you a sense of her original purpose. Sunlight filters in from the open decks above, illuminating schools of baitfish that swirl around the massive support beams. We’ve seen sand tiger sharks cruising the perimeter more often than not, sometimes resting on the deck itself, unconcerned by divers. Our favourite part is exploring the stern, where the prop shaft leads to the massive, barnacle-encrusted propeller. It’s a bit of a swim, but well worth it. There’s usually a strong current, especially on the surface, so we’d suggest a negative entry and a good dive SMB for ascent. This dive is best suited for experienced wreck divers comfortable with deeper profiles and potential currents.
