USS Aeolus - North Carolina

The USS Aeolus, sitting off the North Carolina coast, really delivers. We love how big she is, an impressive wreck to navigate. You’re dropping down onto this enormous former cable repair ship, and the sheer scale hits you immediately. Penetration is a big draw here, with some accessible areas if you’re properly trained and equipped. Inside, you can feel the history, imagining the crew going about their duties. What we really appreciate about the Aeolus is the amount of life that calls it home. We’ve seen amberjacks cruise by in sizeable schools, and the resident sand tiger sharks are a common sight, often just hanging out in the darker sections. Look closely for smaller critters too – we’ve spotted plenty of nudibranchs clinging to the metalwork. The visibility can be variable, but on a good day, the sunlight filtering down through the superstructure is genuinely atmospheric. We'd suggest going early in the morning to beat any potential crowds and to catch the fish when they’re most active. This wreck is perfect for experienced divers who appreciate both the historical aspect and the abundant marine life that has truly made it their own.
