AMIRA-M - Tyre

The AMIRA-M is one of our favourite shallow wrecks in Lebanon, sitting upright at just 11 meters. It’s a proper historical piece, sunk back in 1980 after running aground near Alnakhle Island. You can still make out the outline of the 56-meter motor vessel, with the bow facing seaward and the stern nearer the coast. We love how accessible it is; even newer divers can comfortably spend a full hour exploring her length and penetration is possible in a few spots if you’re properly trained and equipped. What we really enjoy is the way the wreck has become a home. Schools of damselfish shimmer over the decks, and the occasional grumpy grouper eyes you from a shadowy corner. Look closely amongst the twisted metal and you’ll spot nudibranchs grazing on algae. We’d suggest diving this one in the morning for the best light, as the sun streaming through the superstructure is quite a sight. Currents are generally mild, making it a relaxed dive, perfect for photographers or anyone wanting to spend quality time with a piece of history.

The AMIRA-M was a 56-meter motor vessel whose final voyage came to an abrupt end on February 14, 1980. While navigating the waters off the coast of Lebanon, the ship ran aground near Alnakhle Island, just a couple of miles from the port of Tripoli. Unable to be salvaged, the vessel succumbed to the sea and settled on the seabed, where it has remained for over four decades.

Today, the AMIRA-M is a fantastic shallow wreck dive. Sitting at a maximum depth of only 11 meters, it is perfectly suited for novice wreck divers and photographers who can take advantage of the abundant natural light. The wreck is broken up, allowing for safe exploration of its structure, which has become a habitat for a variety of Mediterranean marine life. Its classification as a "dangerous wreck" hints at its deteriorating condition, adding a sense of raw adventure to this fascinating piece of modern maritime history.
