YANTI 03 - Derawan Islands

Yanti 03 is a weird, wonderful little spot, and one of our favourite surface snorkels in Derawan. This isn't a dive site, not really, more an aquatic treasure hunt. The wreck itself is a small fishing boat, totally submerged and sitting in less than a metre of water, just off the main beach. We love drifting over it, peering down through the sun-dappled surface. What makes it special isn't the wreck's size, but how much has made it home. Tiny clownfish dart through anemones that have carpeted the hull. You'll spot pipefish hiding amongst the rust, and often a small cuttlefish or two camouflaged against the sand nearby. It’s an easy, relaxing way to spend an hour, perfect for a surface interval or for those who just want to dip their toes in the water without donning all the gear. Go early in the morning before the day boats stir up the sand, and the light is just right for photography.
