The Cauldron Dive Site - Komodo

The Cauldron in Komodo isn’t for the faint of heart, but we absolutely love it. This site is pure, unadulterated Komodo drift diving, an aquatic rollercoaster that rewards confident divers with some truly incredible action. You drop into a narrow channel, and the current just... takes you. It's a proper wild ride, so good buoyancy and comfort in strong flow are essential. The real magic happens in the bowl, or ‘cauldron’ itself. As you get swept through, the soft corals glow, a mix of purples and oranges. We’ve seen huge schools of fusiliers here, so thick they literally darken the water as they move. Keep an eye out for yellowspotted dottybacks darting in and out of the bowl corals. It’s a fast dive, and the species list reflects the exposed nature: lots of interesting blennies like the bicolor blenny and Christmas blenny clinging to the rocky substrate, and plenty of peacock-tail anemone shrimp if you can slow down enough to spot them. Our top tip? Go at a medium to strong current. Too mellow and you miss the drama, too raging and it’s just a blur. It’s best suited for advanced divers who relish a thrill and aren’t afraid to lean into the current. You’ll experience the raw power of Komodo’s tides firsthand.
