Why dive here
With 238+ marine species recorded in the area - including blacktip reef sharks, giant moray eels, pygmy seahorses, seahorses and sperm whales - Chinatown offers some of Sulawesi's richest diving. Water ranges 29-31°C, warmest June, October, November.
Chinatown is one of those sites that always feels like a reliable friend, a comfortable dive. We usually hit it when we want to just cruise and spot some interesting critters without too much exertion. The seafloor here has quite a lot of sand, but you'll find plenty of smaller coral heads scattered about, usually home to a nice range of cowries and those striking leafy ark shells. Keep an eye out for the small giant clams too, they blend in well. It’s a pretty easy dive, good for shaking off the rust or just enjoying a calm hour underwater, especially for those who prefer to take their time.
