Mataking Post Wreck - Mabul & Kapalai

The Mataking Post Wreck feels more like an artificial reef than a true historical wreck, and that’s precisely why we love it. Sunk intentionally to create a dive site, it’s a small, wooden fishing boat that sits perfectly upright at 19 metres. What you get here is a charming, accessible wreck dive that’s absolutely bursting with life. You’ll find its wooden structure completely encrusted, a testament to how quickly the ocean reclaims anything left in its embrace. Look closely and you’ll spot ghost pipefish swaying gently in the gorgonian fans that have taken root. We’ve spent whole dives just circling the mast, picking out frogfish clinging to barnacles and watching schools of yellowtail snapper drift through the open hull. It’s a photographer's dream for macro shots, with nudibranchs and flatworms always making an appearance. While it’s not a dramatic wreck like some deeper sites, its gentle depth and typically calm conditions make it ideal for beginners looking to experience their first wreck, or for experienced divers who appreciate the finer details of critter hunting. Our tip: go slow, really slow. The best stuff here hides in plain sight.
