PONTIANAK - Mabul & Kapalai

Pontianak is a solid wreck dive, plain and simple. We love that it’s not too deep, sitting upright at around 15 metres, making for some decent bottom time. The carrier went down in ‘77, and it’s a big girl, almost 100 metres long, so you won’t feel like you’re just swimming laps around a small boat. You’ll find the wreck absolutely encrusted now, a true artificial reef. Schools of batfish often hang out around the superstructure, shimmering silver in the shafts of light that pierce the gloom. We’ve spotted plenty of lionfish tucked into crevices and, if you’ve got a good eye, some impressive nudibranchs making their slow crawl over the rust-coloured metal. Entry points are clear for exploring the cargo holds, though we’d always suggest a good guide for penetration here, even at this depth. It’s a great site for photographers, especially when the visibility is decent, usually in the calmer months.
