Cars Dive - Bohol

Cars Dive in Bohol isn't about some grand, intact vessel. Forget the big ships. This site is a scatter of what we believe are Japanese jeeps and trucks, probably dumped or sunk during World War II, lying scattered in about 20 metres of water. It’s an unusual wreck site, more a series of artificial reefs than a single structure, and that's precisely why we love it. The metal frames have completely transformed into living sculpture. You’ll drop down onto a sandy slope, and then the shapes start to emerge – axles, chassis, engine blocks, all encrusted in a riot of sponges and soft corals. We’ve finned past a Blackspotted wrasse darting around what used to be a headlight, and a curious Flaming Blenny peeking out from a rust hole. Look closer, and you’ll spot Savigny's Brittle Stars clinging to the coral. It's a fantastic spot for macro photography, but also just for seeing how completely nature reclaims what's left behind. We think it’s best explored slowly, letting your eyes adjust to the details. We'd suggest aiming for a morning dive before any strong currents pick up; it makes for a much more relaxed rummage through history.
