First Thomas Shoal - Palawan
First Thomas Shoal, out in the South China Sea from Palawan, offers a bit of an adventure for those looking to get off the usual path. While it’s an uninhabited reef, we’ve found some decent coral formations here, particularly brain corals and branching acropora colonies, providing shelter for smaller reef fish. Visibility can be a bit variable depending on the season and local conditions, sometimes dropping to 10-15 meters, but when it’s good, the light plays nicely on the reef. It’s a good spot for divers who appreciate the quiet solitude of a more remote location and don’t mind a longer boat ride to get there.
