USSM DARTER (SS-227) - Palawan

We love a good wreck, and the USS Darter, even in its shallower depths, delivers. This submarine, scuttled back in 1944, sits broken but still recognisable, a testament to wartime ingenuity now colonised by the sea. You’ll spend your dive tracing its 95-meter length, noting the torpedo tubes up front and the general lines of a Fleet-class submarine, a real piece of history right there in the shallows. What it lacks in coral gardens, it makes up for in atmosphere and resident critters. Look closely in the nooks and crannies of the superstructure; we’ve spotted plenty of lionfish tucked away, their venomous spines fanned out, and schools of snapper often mill about the broken hull plates. Our favourite part is imagining the crew's last moments aboard before she was intentionally sunk. It’s a site that really makes you think, perfect for wreck enthusiasts and history buffs who appreciate a tangible connection to the past. Because it's fairly shallow, even newer divers can enjoy a good long bottom time exploring the Darter's secrets.
