North Atoll - Malayan Wreck - Tubbataha Reef

The Malayan Wreck isn’t just a hunk of metal on the seabed, it’s a living reef and a slice of history. We love it because it’s a proper dive site, not just a quick peek. Dropping down, you’ll find the wreck itself, a large freighter, lying on its starboard side, largely intact, which is always a bonus. The holds are open, inviting exploration for those with the right training and confidence – we’d suggest a good torch for peering into the darker corners, as there’s plenty to see inside. What makes the Malayan special is how it’s become part of Tubbataha. Schools of trevally often swirl around the superstructure, a silver tornado against the blue. Look closely and you’ll spot nudibranchs clinging to the metal, and various reef fish darting in and out of the crevices. The current here can pick up, so be prepared for a drift, but that often brings in the bigger pelagics. It’s a dive for those who appreciate both history and the power of nature to reclaim what’s lost.
