Sanctuary is one of those sites we always recommend to macro photographers, a real slow-dive kind of place. You drop onto a sandy slope, peppered with small coral heads and a healthy smattering of sea grass, which is where the real show begins. We love spending an hour or more here, barely moving, just scanning the blades of grass for tiny blennies – the filamentous blennies here are particularly cheeky, darting in and out. Keep an eye out for painted spiny lobsters tucked into crevices, their antennae waving like an orchestra conductor. It’s not about big pelagics here; it’s about the hunt for the small stuff: Hayashi's cardinalfish flitting between rocks, or the perfectly camouflaged lighthouse lizardfish blending into the sand. Dive it early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer other divers. If you enjoy a methodical search and have a good eye, Sanctuary will reward you.
