IGO KAKUAN MARU - Koh Lanta & Phi Phi

The Igo Kakuan Maru is a brilliant deep dive, and honestly, we think it’s one of the best wrecks in the area. Sunk in 1944, this former Japanese salvage vessel sits perfectly upright on the seabed at 32 metres, making it a proper wreck dive, not just a pile of rubble. We love dropping down onto the bow and seeing its structure emerge from the blue, often with huge schools of yellowtail barracuda circling above. You can spend most of your bottom time exploring the deck and superstructure, peering into cargo holds that now house giant moray eels and lionfish. Our favourite part is the stern, where the prop shaft housing is still largely intact, a real magnet for schooling fusiliers that are so thick they sometimes block out the light. It’s a site that rewards careful exploration, so bring a good torch and take your time. This isn't one for beginners, but if you're comfortable at depth and have a bit of wreck experience, you'll be grinning for the rest of the day.
