Koh Kraden Wreck - Koh Lanta & Phi Phi

The Koh Kraden Wreck is one of our favourites in the Phi Phi Lanta area, a proper old fishing trawler that went down maybe twenty years back. It sits upright on a sandy bottom, around 26 metres, with the deck around 20 metres. We love it because it’s intact enough for some proper penetration if you’re comfortable, swimming through the wheelhouse or peeking into the holds where schools of snapper hang out. Outside, you’ll often find large marbled groupers eyeing you from behind a deck winch, and we’ve seen some hefty lionfish perched on the railings. Visibility here can be a bit hit or miss, sometimes a perfect 20 metres, other days a murky 10 metres with strong currents. That’s when it gets interesting, with the wreck materialising out of the green gloom. Our tip: go mid-morning if you can, after the early boats but before the afternoon rush. It suits divers looking for something beyond reefs, wanting that thrill of exploring human history underwater. It’s got a real character to it, barnacle-encrusted and slowly being reclaimed by the sea.
