Koh Talak North - Koh Lanta & Phi Phi

Koh Talak North might not get the same hype as Hin Daeng or Koh Haa, but we think it’s a brilliant little spot, especially if you’re into the smaller stuff. We often find ourselves drifting slowly over the coral bommies here, eyes peeled for the Queensland Eviota, a tiny little goby that looks like it’s wearing a sparkly jacket. It’s got a lovely, relaxed feel to it, a real contrast to some of the busier Phi Phi sites. The beauty of Talak North is in the details. Keep an eye out for Diana’s Hogfish, their fins fluttering as they dart between the coral, and we’ve had some fantastic encounters with big schools of Rainbowfish shimmering in the sunlight. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light seems to hit the reef just right, really bringing out the colours of the Butterflyfish and parrotfish. It’s a pretty easy dive, good for stretching out a long bottom time, and the currents are usually gentle enough that you can just let yourself drift, picking out the Blacktip Soldierfish hiding in the crevices. It’s a great place to slow down and really appreciate the smaller wonders.
