With 657+ marine species recorded in the area - including barracuda, blacktip reef sharks, blue sharks, blue-spotted stingrays and bull sharks - La Cathédrale offers some of Grand Lagoon's richest cave diving.
La Cathédrale, tucked away in the Grand Lagoon near Hienghène, definitely lives up to its name. It's a huge underwater cavern, feeling exactly like some grand, ancient building, complete with natural skylights filtering light down through the rock. We’ve found the scale of the place pretty impressive, with these dramatic formations looming around you. You’ll spot everything from Ocellated Cardinals tucked into crevices to the occasional Snakehead Cowrie cruising the walls, but the real draw here is the structure itself. It’s a site for divers who appreciate dramatic underwater geology and aren't afraid of a bit of overhead environment.
