Astrolabe Reef - Goat Island & Hauraki Gulf

Diving Daintree Reef feels a little different, even for the Great Barrier Reef. We've always found a sense of genuine wildness here, probably because it's so close to the ancient Daintree Rainforest. You can almost taste the rainforest in the air before you even hit the water. Down below, the coral structures are immense. We're talking serious Staghorn and Branch coral formations that create natural swim-throughs and overhangs. It’s not about finding one big showstopper, it’s the sheer density of everything. We’ve seen Hexagon Groupers lurking in the shadows and squadrons of Schlegel's Parrotfish munching away, their colours vivid even in deeper light. The Butterflyfish, particularly the Longnose and Sickle varieties, are everywhere, flitting through the coral. Keep an eye out for Ward's Damsel and Philippine Damsels; they’re small but incredibly striking against the coral. If you surface between dives, you might catch a glimpse of Masked Boobies or Roseate Terns overhead. We find Daintree Reef truly comes alive mid-morning, as the light penetrates the shallows and illuminates the coral. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate big, healthy reef systems and don’t mind a bit of a journey to get there.
