KINGLUN NO 12 (POSSIBLY) - Sandy Island

Okay, let’s get one thing straight: if you’re looking for a deep wreck, this isn’t it. The KINGLUN NO 12, or whatever her real name was, is practically kissing the surface off Sandy Island. We’re talking a maximum depth of maybe a meter, if that. But dismiss it at your peril. This old factory ship, grounded back in '75, is our pick for a unique snorkel or a super shallow dive that feels like a history lesson. What we love here is the sheer accessibility and the way the sea has reclaimed it. You can clearly make out the hull plates, the ribs, even some machinery parts poking above and just below the waterline. Sunlight just floods the whole scene. You’ll weave through metal structures, now covered in a thin fuzz of algae, and watch small schools of jacks dart through the shadows. Parrotfish graze idly, and we've often spotted juvenile barracuda lurking in the deeper pockets of the wreck. It’s a fantastic spot for photographers looking for interesting light and texture, or anyone wanting a relaxed dip with a tangible sense of place. Bring a wide-angle lens, and maybe a small float; it’s easy to spend an hour just drifting and exploring the nooks and crannies.
