MEMPHIS (POSSIBLY) - Bayahibe & La Romana

We’re pretty sure this is the *Memphis*, a tugboat scuttled back in 2003, though the 'possibly' in the name does give it a bit of an enigmatic air. Sunk at a comfortable 9 metres, it’s an ideal second dive or a great introduction to wreck diving. The tug sits upright, remarkably intact, and we love how the wheelhouse offers an easy swim-through. Keep an eye out for schooling snapper around the superstructure, and if you peek into the darker corners, you’ll often spot a moray eel tucked away. The shallower depth means light penetrates beautifully, illuminating the growth on the hull, especially the sponges and small corals. On a sunny day, the whole wreck shimmers. It’s a great site for photographers who want to practice their wreck composition without strong currents or deep deco obligations. Our favourite time to dive it is early afternoon, when the sun is high and you get those beautiful light rays cutting through the water. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for feeling the history without any stress.
